>> Synopsis

The Swarm is unrecognizable, untraceable, and unpredictable—random attacks on the streets of Chicago by a mob of crazed teens that leaves death in its wake. It’s been two years since the last attack, but Lia Finch has found clues that reveal the Swarm is ready to claim a new victim.
Lia is the only one still pursuing her father’s killers, two years after attorney Steven Finch’s murder by the Swarm. Devastated and desperate for answers, Lia will do anything to uncover the reasons behind his death and to stop someone else from being struck down. But due to debilitating asthma and PTSD that leaves her with a tenuous hold on reality, Lia is the last person to mount a crusade on her own.
After a close encounter with the Swarm puts Lia on their radar, she teams up with a teen hacker, a reporter, and a mysterious stranger who knows firsthand how the mob works. Together, they work to uncover the master puppeteer behind the group. Though if Lia and her network don’t stop the person pulling the strings—and fast—Lia may end up the next target.

>> About the Author <<

Kimberly Gabriel started writing in fourth grade when she wrote, bound, and gave away books of terrible poetry to family and teachers as holiday gifts. Today she is an English teacher, who still squanders all free minutes to write and uses it as the best scapegoat for her laundry avoidance issues.
When she is not teaching or writing, Kimberly is enjoying life with her husband, her three beautiful children, and a seriously beautiful boxer in the northern suburbs of Chicago.
Every Stolen Breath is her debut novel and a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection.

Q & A with Kimberly <

To All The Books I’ve Read Before: “Do any of your novels reflect real life experiences?”

Kimberly: “Yes! The premise of Every Stolen Breath is based on real life attacks that broke out around Chicago. In 2011, there were a series of “flash-mob” attacks where dozens of teenagers would suddenly emerge from the crowd and descend on one tourist to mug and attack. The stories terrified me so much that I eventually took that concept, made it worse, added elements of mystery and romance to it, and turned it into the basis of Every Stolen Breath.”

To All The Books I’ve Read Before: “What is your favorite type of genre to write about?”

Kimberly: “Definitely thriller. I love to read and write books packed with tension.”

To All The Books I’ve Read Before: “How do you generally come up with the ideas for your novels?”

Kimberly: “Every Stolen Breath is my debut, but I have two other manuscripts that I’m working on. For all three, they were sparked by something I come across in the news that shocked or terrified me.”

To All The Books I’ve Read Before: “What inspired you to write EVERY STOLEN BREATH?”

Kimberly: “For years as a seventh grade literacy teacher, I’ve seen students in my classroom drawn to stories packed with tension that keep the pages turning. For the longest time, I didn’t have enough YA thrillers to give them. I wrote EVERY STOLEN BREATH with them in mind as my audience.”

To All The Books I’ve Read Before: “What was your writing process for EVERY STOLEN BREATH?”

Kimberly: “When I started EVERY STOLEN BREATH, I was still writing for me. I drafted the first half of it as a pantser with no idea where the story was going. Then when I hit the middle, my vision became very clear, and I plotted the rest of the book. For the longest time, I thought this was definitely the “wrong” way to write a book until I recently sat on a panel with Scott Westerfeld, a writer I’ve admired for years. After writing 28 books, he said he still writes this way.”

To All The Books I’ve Read Before: “Do you possess any of the qualities that your main character, Lia in EVERY STOLEN BREATH has?”

Kimberly: “Yes. I gave Lia one of my negative qualities. Lia and I both respond to trauma, stress, and emotion in a similar way. Lia buries it, and throws herself in some time of problem she thinks she can fix. (Let me also make it perfectly clear that I do not recommend this!). “

To All The Books I’ve Read Before: “If there was one thing you would like your readers to know about EVERY STOLEN BREATH what is it?”

Kimberly: “EVERY STOLEN BREATH is an exploration of strength. While the Swarm uses physical strength as a way to control and intimidate people, sixteen-year-old Lia relies on her mental strength to escape the Swarm’s attempts to murder her and even fight back against the Swarm. Lia, who has asthma, anxiety, and PTSD, perceives these traits as weaknesses that hold her back, but instead her resilience and drive to push through her struggles demonstrates a fierce mental strength. Some of the strongest, most determined people I’ve ever met have become that way by battling adversity. I wanted Lia to reflect that because to me that’s what real strength is. I hope young readers see that that mental strength is often more powerful than physical strength, and that even people who are perceived as weak can be incredibly strong when they need to be.”
